Created by Jorge Lavelli fifty years ago, at the Théâtre de la Cité internationale (Paris), L’homosexuel ou la difficulté de s’exprimer, an emblematic piece of Copi’s work with many existing versions. As part of its research as well as the re-edition of the text published by Christian Bourgois, the stage director Thibaud Croisy offers a journey through the original creation starting from the images of the photographer Claude Le-Anh. This presentation will be an opportunity to set off the archives, trying to “see” an œuvre thanks to what is left of it and to engage in the game a comparison between the first bet on stage and another version of it.
Written fifty years ago, L’homosexuel ou la difficulté de s’exprimer, is not strictly a piece speaking on the “homosexual condition”, or perhaps even on homosexuality. The interest focuses primarily on what is inexpressible in any body, in any identity, by putting on stage the difficulty or even the linguistic inability to say exactly what and how we are. To honor the crossbreeding of Copi’s dramaturgy, Thibaud Croisy brought together a trio of flamboyant actors, with different stories and backgrounds: Frédéric Leidgens in the role of Madre, a castrating mother that dwarfs the Andalusians of García Lorca; Emmanuelle Lafon in the role of Garbo, a piano teacher with “unconventional” methods.; and Helena de Laurens who embodies Irina, the singular and perverse human being which tries to escape all categories and perhaps to be a language herself. But then, who will win this awful game? Who will kill whom? And what will remain at the end of this night when the demons will wake up from their own bodies ? The snow ? The silence of the steppes? The memory of a fundamental marginality and lost, impossible to be preserved and to be said? You know you’re coming to see this barbaric and melancholic comedy, halfway between a boosted Feydeau and a bullfight on the ice floe.

MADRE
Irina, j’ai reçu une lettre de l’oncle Pierre. Il est très inquiet
à ton sujet. Il se demande pourquoi tu as abandonné ton
cours de piano. Madame Garbo lui a retourné cinquante
kopecks lui notifiant que tu n’y assistais pas depuis
deux mois. Irina, qu’est-ce que tu fais entre deux heures
et cinq heures ?
IRINA
Je me promène.
MADRE
Seule ?
IRINA
Seule.
MADRE
Par quarante degrés sous zéro ? Tu te promènes seule
dans les steppes par quarante degrés sous zéro tous les
après-midi depuis deux mois ? Tu es solide. Tu sais ce
qui nous arriverait si l’oncle Pierre venait à nous couper
les vivres ?
IRINA
Je hais le piano.
MADRE
Tu hais le piano, mais tu aimes les steppes infestées de
loups. Tu hais Mozart mais tu adores le mensonge. Qui
est ton amant, Irina ?
IRINA
Je n’ai pas d’amant.
MADRE
C’est le petit travesti blond qui habite chez Catarina
la Grande. Je l’ai reconnu malgré son grand chapeau à
voilette. Je le trouve assez vulgaire.
IRINA
Au moins lui il a une bite.
MADRE
C’est la seule chose qui t’intéresse au monde ? De te
faire baiser par un coiffeur à voilette dans les toilettes
de la gare entre midi et cinq heures ?
IRINA
Entre deux heures et quatre heures et demie.
MADRE
Il a une bite grande comment ?
IRINA
Moyenne.
MADRE
Il te baise debout ?
IRINA
On met du papier journal par terre et on se couche.
MADRE
Est-ce que tu l’aimes, Irina ?
IRINA
Non.
MADRE
Tu pourrais prendre tes cours de piano entre midi et
deux heures.
IRINA
Je hais le piano.
MADRE
Mais tu aimes le confort ! Tu sais ce qui va nous arriver
quand l’oncle Pierre nous coupera les vivres ? Tu nous
vois toutes les deux mendier dans les steppes ? Mange
ta soupe.
IRINA
Non.
MADRE
Mange ta soupe, c’est peut-être la dernière soupe qu’on
pourra se payer.
IRINA
Je ne mangerai pas ma soupe.
MADRE
On se fait baiser tout l’après-midi par quarante degrés
sous zéro et on ne touche pas à une soupe chaude au
dîner ?
IRINA
On ne touche pas à une soupe chaude au dîner.
